A study was conducted to compare writings between students and experienced adult writers. As a result of this study, Nancy Summers has come to realize the difference in writing techniques. This studies main purpose was to identify how each group revised the composition. There are several stages in revising material both differentiate between both groups. When asked about revision, students had no idea of what Nancy spoke of. Even though the student didn’t know what revision meant, that didn’t limit them to other means of revising techniques. What the student would do, they would scratch out and do over, or just add what need to be added and omit repeated words. In other words revision as experienced writers would see it. However an experienced adult writer did know about revision and explained their concept of it. As experienced writers they frequently found themselves rewriting there articles several times as a part of revising. Experienced writers main purpose in revising was to find the form or shape of their argument. One draft is not nearly enough for revision or rewriting the article. In conclusion students need to discover the difference between writing and speech as experienced writer do for the possibility of revision.
What are some differences in the revision strategies between students and experience adult writers?
Student writers have a very different approach when it comes to revising their material. For the vast majority of the students did not know what it was to revise a paper. Nancy asked the student to explain what their writing process was. Some students answered they would scratch out and do over again their material. This meant as they reread their material, they would omit sentence that were fractions and they would scratch out and put words that made more sense. Other techniques they used were redoing the work meaning simplify clean up the article. Slashing and throwing out was another example of revision. This meant to omit material that wasn’t inspirational. And finally marking out, this means to mark out words in the draft and putting different ones in their place. Even though the students were not aware of the term revision they most certainly revised their material. On the other hand, the experienced adult writer had other methods of revising their articles. Some rewrite as they are writing the material as cannot determine the amount of drafts the write because they many, one is not enough. Other writers rewriting is more like reconstructing their first draft any make decisions and respond to their writing. Another technique of rewriting is in the form of separating the first draft in different parts and questioning the material. As the question the material the resolve what didn’t come together and opens for more ideas, and reconstructing those part, so it’s a constant revision. The experienced writers describe their primary objective when revising as finding the form or shape of their arguments. In conclusion both students and experienced writers revise their material. The only difference is that they take different approaches in doing so
