Understanding Composition Summary
Understanding Composing by Sandra Pearl is about how all kinds of different writers use different structures of writing, like “retrospective and projective” structures, to form their work. Both of these structures are similar for composing written pieces. It talks about how some writers use the method of taping themselves, thinking aloud, to witness their own work being made. When doing this, people like Anne begin to see the basic patterns of composing. They recognize the recursiveness in their work, which means all that they do, reoccurs in their heads over and over again. Some writers re-read their work after a few phrases, while others do not re read their work until they have written a big chunk of it. By using this method, many writers ensure that what they are writing make sense to their readers. Writers use another method called “felt sense”. Felt sense is a tool writers use to write what they feel inside their body. By doing this, they become more and more experienced and adept writers. They refer to felt sense as their inner voice of “inspiration”. Writers also have to have experience of being good readers, so that way they will be able to tell if what they are writing makes sense. By being good readers, they can act like they are a reader while they are writing their work. This is a good method because they can get idea to what it looks like.Question5: What is “retrospective structuring”? What is “discovery”? How does the latter term differ from its common sense? Retrospective structuring depends upon the model of the writing process that they have internalized. If writers realize that the writing process is recursiveness, than it makes it very easy for them. Discovering is writing in the way work is crafted and constructed. It includes us in a method of coming-into-being. We work at sharing through the language we use, then what we look to see what we have written to see if it accurately captures the message we intended from in the work piece that we have constructed.
